Sei completamente fuori strada.
"The most significant difference between floating point and fixed point: Fixed point DSPs don't have big enough accumulators, and they clip.
The Motorola 56K DSP processes data using 24-bit fixed point math, and can do double-precision 48-bit math (at significant processing load expense). It uses a 56-bit accumulator (hence the name), with 48 of these bits used for the incresed precision of the multiply operation (24+24 = 48), and the remaining 8-bits used to prevent sign-extension overflow (these are known as guard-bits, and do not increase precision!). The 56K also does not provide hardware dither, so the extra accumulator bits must be either trucated or rounded to 24- or 48-bits. (The 56K provides a very nice rounding mode that minimizes DC errors and limit cycles, btw.) Unfortunately, the accumulator result must be clipped before it's used.
The most common floating point DSPs are in your computer, and they process data using both 32-bit and 64-bit float math, with no penalty for double-precision. The interesting thing is that the accumulator in the FPU (floating point unit) is 80-bits! So the noise margin is well below even the double-precision limit, unlike the 56K. In addition, the result does not need to be clipped, since that's one of the main benefits with float. Rounding or magnitude reduction are done using the standard approaches. So again there's no hardware dither, but dither can be applied to a rounded double-precision result when converting it to fixed (it should not be done to float). Nearly every native DSP algo uses double-precision internally because it's free.
With regards to transferring data between processing elements (different DSPs, storage, etc.), float is far superior to fixed because there are no headroom or noise-floor issues: *all* the bits of precision are used for the signal. With fixed, at least 2-bits, and preferably 3-bits of headroom must be maintained, so the effective resolution of 24-bit fixed is really 21-22 bits, and drops as the level goes down, while 32-bit float remains between 24-25 bits constantly without clipping."
